A Vicious Circle...

Pain Management

If you have long-term pain you may be anxious about what it means, how long it will last and how much it interferes with your daily life.

But this can mean that you dwell on the pain and it can then start a vicious circle of behaviour which can take control of the way you live your life

It's important that people take you and your pain seriously, and you may be pleased to learn that the answer to managing your pain may not be dependant upon you taking stronger and stronger painkillers (analgesics).

There are two main types of pain:

1. Acute pain, also known as short-term pain, is pain that has come on recently.

2. Chronic pain, or long-term pain, is pain that has lasted for three months or more.

We Need Pain...

Pain exists to warn you that something is wrong, that something needs your attention.  It is designed to help you not to injure yourself, or injure yourself further, or to alert you that some function of the body is not OK.

Even though pain control is one of the most well-known benefits of hypnosis, before we see you for pain control we always insist that you have been checked by a medical doctor for your chronic or persistent pain, preferably a neurologist.

If hypnosis is an acceptable treatment according to your doctor then we are happy to treat you.  In most cases we can help you have a positive effect by quickly reducing your level of pain.

Fear and Avoidance

Dr Alf Collins, a consultant in pain management at Musgrove Park Hospital, says a lot of anxiety about pain is misguided. "For example, a lot of people who get angina pain think it’s a mini heart-attack, and then try to avoid any situation that they think brought that pain on.”

"Worrying about the pain means they do less, and this loss of activity means they become more and more disabled."

Dr Collins also says it's not the pain that rules the lives of some people, but what they think the pain means. “Fear and avoidance is one of the biggest problems associated with pain, and this can cause a disability, as well as the pain itself.”
