Top athletes and sports people agree that peak performance can only be achieved by the correct mental ‘state’. Many talk about ‘being in the zone’ and they are in fact referring to being in a light hypnotic trance. It is not unusual when ‘in the zone’ to experience time distortion (things seem to moving slower and there appears to be more time to react), along with a sense that any body movement is ‘flowing’, added to an amazing feeling of calm. This is why sports psychologists utilise hypnosis in their work, and also why many sports people are using hypnotherapists. Unfortunately, talent and hard work alone do not produce great performances. Top performers understand that the mental side of sport is equally as important (if not more so) as the physical side. However, it is easy to place mental barriers into our thought processes, but hard to remove them. A large amount of the work we do to help clients achieve top performance is the help them remove these mental barriers and eliminate negative (or limiting) thoughts. We also help clients induce the right mental state for themselves so they can use this in their warm-up routine as part of their pre-performance regime.
